Running a small business can easily become your whole world. You wake up thinking about it, spend your days working on it and often go to bed thinking about all the things you still need to do!
When you’re passionate about what you do, switching off isn’t always easy. There’s always another idea, another plan or something else to tick off the never-ending to-do list.
But recently, I’ve been reminded of the importance of doing something just for me.
I’ve been attending a floristry course, and I’m absolutely loving it!
I’m enjoying learning new skills, meeting new people and having something completely different to think about. For a few hours, my focus shifts away from Charlie and Boo, and I’m simply enjoying the experience of learning something new.
And do you know what? It’s lovely!
Making Time for Life Beyond Work
I’m still as passionate about Charlie and Boo as ever, and I have plenty of plans and ambitions for the business. But I’m also learning that it’s important to make space for other things in life.
There’s something refreshing about stepping outside your usual routine, meeting new people and discovering something different. You never quite know what you’ll enjoy until you give it a go, and sometimes the experience itself is the most rewarding part.
My floristry course might lead somewhere in the future. Perhaps I’ll decide to explore it further, or perhaps I’ll simply finish the course having had a wonderful experience.
Either way, I’m enjoying the journey and giving myself the freedom to see where it takes me.
Because while building a business is exciting, we shouldn’t become so caught up in creating our future that we forget to enjoy the present.
So, here’s my little nudge to anyone who has been putting off trying something new.
Book that course. Try that hobby. Give yourself permission to be a beginner again.
You don’t need to be brilliant at it, and you don’t need to know where it will lead.
You just need to give it a go.
As for me, I’m off to enjoy my floristry journey, one flower at a time. Will it lead somewhere? Maybe. Maybe not.
And for now, I’m perfectly happy with that.
Because life is about more than what we achieve. It’s also about what we discover along the way.
